Sound Waves

I was first led me to make this body of work, while sitting on a beach, as a respite and response to the overload of media vying for my attention with a constant stream of click bait headlines, and the ever-present angst created by the deepening of political and social divides. Line became the language that through abstraction suggested the narrative. Drawing a linear repetition to weave together visual planes and aural spaces eased my mind into a meditative state. But the narrative changed as my travels landed me on different shores. The states of winds, tides and shifting sands became noticeably more erratic and extreme as seemingly predictable patterns revealed themselves to be unpredictable. Violent storm surges eroded communities. Warmer waters pushed algae into foreign waters suffocating ecosystems they don’t naturally grow in while dumping a stenched flora onto the sands. As we witness the environment’s uncontrollable power in defiance of human abuse, I continue to make a larger body of work to remind us of the comfort and awe, and needed respite our natural world provides.

Painting the Body in Squares

Painting the Body in Squares is a personal journey with a universal theme  that uses the square as a vessel to investigate the body’s aging process through its physical and emotional tolls on our identity and self-worth. Each series in the project addresses a different topic of this struggle, made especially more difficult being a woman.  Facing shrinking, wrinkling and greying to age related heart disease, infections, pain, cancer, and a slew of other post-menopausal issues, women struggle to be heard and recognized. The square becomes the stable force, providing the strength to persevere. Mixed Media; Gouache, Water Color, Graphite, Collage
